The incidence of carcinoma of the pancreas has been increasing in Japan. In 1994, about 15,000 deaths caused by pancreatic adenocarcinoma were reported in Japan. It is the fifth most common cause of death by malignant neoplasms. Inspite of the development of more sophisticated diagnostic techniques, it remains difficult to detect panctearic carcinoma in the early stage. However, the resection rate has been increasing thanks to recent advances in surgical techniques and the application of extensive surgery in Japan. The five-year survival rate of Stage ¡Í, ¡Í-, ¡Í¢Óand ¡Í¢Ôaccording to Japan Pancreas Society staging after surgical resection was 46.3%, 27.5%, 20.4% ans 8.3%, respectively.
